Course syllabus

Welcome to the course!

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and new media are important aspects of development and social change. Discourse surrounding the significance of ICT for development offer divergent opinions where ICT are seen as deepening the rift between the developed and developing world, but also as a solution to the problem of inequitable development. Both viewpoints serve to mobilize ICT as an instrumental approach for social change. The aim of this course is to explore ICT and new media for development and social change by reflecting on their integration into existing media and communication contexts and cultures as well as their changing materialities, tools, and practices.

The course has three (3) central, interlinked themes:

ICT4D, Aid Work and Communicating Development; New Media, Activism & Development; Social Media, Data & Development

The learning activities for this course consist of two (2) integrated assignments based on your group blogging exercise and the content of your blog posts. The group assignment accounts for 3.5 ECTS and the individual assignment accounts for 4 ECTS of this 7.5 ECTS course.
